Diabetic Footwear Tips

Diabetic Footwear

Taking care of your feet as a diabetic is an essential daily part of your life, when choosing footwear for your diabetic feet it is important to get good fitting footwear as at leat half of reported foot problems are caused by poor shoes.

Tips for Diabetic Feet....

Choose wide comfortable shoes like athletic trainers or cushioned walking shoes.
If you suffer from any foot deformaties like Bunions, Tailor Toes, Hammer Toes making sure the shoe is wide enough to accomodate these conditions is essential.

When shoes are wider this will allow you to wear podiatry inserts, gel supports or shields to prevent any additional injury as you walk.

UK Diabetic patients may be entitled to NHS customed insoles or supports if foot deformaties are present check with your local Podiatrist or GP.

Never wear tight high pointed shoes or high heels as these shoe types may cause friction pressure and restriction when walking, in addition corns and callous or blisters which could lead to infections and foot ulcers.

In summer it will be difficult but try not to wear open shoes if cracks or lesions are present as infections could enter through the skin and cause infections.

It is always recommend to have your feet measured by a professional to ensure the correct fitting is purchased when buying footwear for diabetics.  good strong durable shoes with soft breathable uppers are good choices. and keep well away from cheap plastic footwear which will prevent your feet breathing and restrict movement.

Always break in new footwear , wear the shoes around the house for 10 minutes each day until they feel comfortable.

Check on a regular basis the insoles are not cracked or split as this may cause friction and cause callous or blisters and give the shoes a good shake in case a loose stone has entered in the shoe from your previous time of use.

Prevention of friciton and restriction is the steps required to prevent diabetic foot injures
keeping your feet healthy and infection free will mean happy comfortable diabetic feet.
